Current studies include the synthesis of biomimetic model compounds of metalloenzyme active sites. Of particular interest is directed at the bioinspired coordination Chemistry, i.e., small molecules (CO2, N2O, O2, H2, S8, NO2-, NO3-) activation by Ni-/Fe-containing complexes. The synthesis of dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) and NO trapping agents, and the biomimetically synthesized iron-nitrite and -thionitrite compounds ([(NO)nFe-NO2] and [Fe-(RSNO)]) are of particular interest in the ongoing studies of transition metal-NO chemistry. Another major efforts involve biomimetic model study on the synthesis of the anionic/neutral/cationic {Fe(NO)}9/{Fe(NO)}10 S/N/O-bound dinitrosyl iron compounds (DNICs), interconversion among anionic/neutral/cationic {Fe(NO)}9, neutral {Fe(NO)10 dinitrosyl iron compounds, Roussin’s red ester, anionic Roussin’s red ester, and degradation/reassembly of the [Fe-S] cluster, respectively.  Studies are being carried out to determine the oxidation states of metal and NO by XAS, EPR and SQUID.
